Things That are Good in February

I'm sick in bed with a mound of blankets and cup of tea to keep me warm. Last week was excellent fun but so busy that I just got tired out and am just now coming down with a cold. Bill and I started a shared google calendar to keep track of our goings on, only when he updates it he forgets to turn off the reminders so I receive emails telling me things like that he's going to be in Tahoe until Monday and that I will miss him.

Wednesday night was one of the highlights of my week. First I went for drinks with girls from work. We had a great time and went on about how we had to go back to that particular bar until the waitress messed up our check 3 times and I made a snotty remark to her before leaving. I felt guilty about it all night. Afterwards, I met up with Bill at the Port Authority to go see Andrew Bird at Carnegie Hall. I've never been to Carnegie Hall before and I got to see the entire thing because we were way up high in the top balcony. I felt like I was going to plummet to my death if I got up to use the bathroom. It was scary but I got used to it. The opener, Dosh, who plays with Andrew Bird, is a one man band who sits in the center of a circular machine made of what appeared to be drums, keyboards, and a magical machine that let him record and loop different instruments to make a song. His music was spacey and enjoyable. The songs were long but I suspect that there were breaks between songs that I was unaware of because a song would begin with one name and end with another. When Andrew Bird came out, he first played solo barefoot on a magic carpet. I was really impressed with how amazingly talented he is. He's obviously a classically trained musician and also an experimental weirdo. But these two elements came together very nicely. First, he played the violin which I always enjoy since I played it in high school. But because of that I know that it must be very difficult to play it while singing, which he did! After the band accompanied him on stage, he played a mix of old and new songs. He's an extremely talented song writer and musician but I must say I prefer the songs from the first album which are a bit poppier and more listener-friendly. I was disappointed that he didn't play more songs from the first album. Also, it was just a very long show: two encores. By the time the first encore (which was amazing) was over I was ready to return to ground level and head home but then the band returned to the stage and since the rows are tighter than coach seats on an airplane with an extremely steep drop and we were in the middle of the row there was no escape. His song choices for the second encore were a bit strange. Overall, it was an incredible experience though, being in Carnegie Hall along with hearing Andrew Bird's indisputable genius.

The other highlight of my week was going skiing at my aunt and uncle's condo in Vernon. It's one of the few times during the year that I spend with Kevin and Barbara. It's basically ski all day and hang out and party at night which basically means eating, drinking, and playing pool and video games. I love my family. They are the most fun! Moving in 3 1/2 weeks now. We've got two rooms to fill in the apartment so we're having an open house on Sunday. Also, ice skating party in Prospect Heights on Friday night with Patty and her work friends. Woohoo! I like fun and I'm actually having some more of it lately.
