A little update

Bill and I went to the MOMA this weekend to see Into the Sunset: Photography's Image into the American west. During the time that the west was being settled, photography was emerging as a medium for documentation. It was incredible to see photos taken in the 1800's. It's like looking through time at the people who were just discovering and creating America. The exhibit also had modern photographs as well as a lot of photos from the 1970's and 1980's. It was nice to see them all mixed together, the new with the old and to really see the difference that a century makes.  We got to talking about how this will be different in a hundred years from now. Back in the 1860's photography was a new advent and not so easy to come by. Now everyone is constantly taking pictures. Some are documentation. Some are art. And some are just for pleasure. It will be easy to find images of history so if something is going to make it into an art exhibit, it's going to have to be either a very special picture or of a special and bygone style, object or idea. 

After we were finished at the museum, we noticed that 45th - 47th streets on Broadway were closed to traffic. Of course it was a mad house and people were just camping in the street. This is a ridiculous way to spend a perfectly good afternoon.

Pet peeves

1. When people do not stay to the right of the sidewalk
2. Watching women walk around NY in uncomfortable shoes. If you have a lot of walking to do, wear sneakers or at least flats. You are slow and your shoes are loud.
3. People who walk onto the train and think that they are entitled to a seat. You have be a) pregnant b) 90 years old or c) handicapped for someone to give up their seat. Those are the rules. I don’t make them up.
4. People who walk in a line of three or more and do not move over to let people pass.
I would probably rank walking to and from the train as my least favorite times of day. When Emma and Tim were visiting from London a month ago, I had a chance to look at NY the way a tourist does. We walked slowly and looked at the buildings. We did things like visit Ellis Island and go to the Top of the Rock. It was fun and I was happy to be here afterwards. I guess that feeling didn’t last long but I’m happy that Bill and I are going to Philly this weekend. Thank you Bolt Bus. It’s not too far but the change of scenery is welcome. When we come home, we’ll have to plan a real vacation for later in the year.
In other news, I just received a batch of the new QPB catalogs, complete with my first editor letter!

Will people actually pay to read newspapers online?

I don’t think so but apparently they are going to give it a shot.

“A survey by the University of Southern California's Annenberg center found that Net users are spending 53 minutes per week reading online newspapers, up from 41 minutes in 2007. The problem, as you've undoubtedly heard, is that the print advertising that has supported sizable newsrooms is plunging, while online ads bring in just a fraction of the revenue. Combine that with an Internet culture built on free content, and newspapers suddenly find themselves on a starvation diet.”

I never thought about this but it’s true. Plus people pay to subscribe to newspapers but read them online for free. He goes on to say “But what about the old rolled-up, flip-through-the-pages, take-it-on-the-subway product?” Ah! Here’s he is talking about what I like to call “obnoxious newspaper people.” A newspaper is too big to read on the train without constantly hitting someone else, especially on a busy rush-hour train. Don’t do it.

The Sounds “Secret” Show at Santo’s Party House

Bill took me to a listening party at Santo’s Party House (Andrew W. K.’s club) for The Sounds new album Crossing the Rubicon last night. It turned out to not be a listening party but a secret show but it wasn’t really a secret because I think everyone knew what they were there for.
